Tutorial Eight: Posting You Tube Videos and Flickr Badges to Blogs: Explaining the process

Embedding a You Tube Video

Embedding a Flickr Badge

Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology

Provide a definition of Assistive technology

Any item, piece of equipment or product system whether acquired commerically off the shelf, modified, or customized that is used to increase or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
Cook, A.M., & Hussey, S.M. (2000). Assistive technologies: principles and practice. St Louis: Mosby

Describe one piece of equipment introduced in the assistive technology tutorial. Provide information on size, cost and functions

In the tutorial of assistive technology, I found the super shaker bed vibrator to be very interesting. This is placed under the pillow or between a mattress and box strings. It works as an alarm clock by letting off powerful vibrations that are able to wake up extremely heavy sleepers. It has a built in temperature sensor protects the unit against overheating. It is designed to be plugged into the vibrator outlet on the back of the sonic boom alarm clock. The device is quite small in size, fitting into the palm of your hand, and prices are around forty to fifty dollars.

How does your chosen piece of equipment increase functional capacity for the user? Provide examples here from the tutorial and lecture

The super shaker bed vibrator increases functional capacity of a person by allowing them to set the alarm clock to a particular time, and therefore vibrating the bed to wake the people at that time set instead of setting off an alarm with sound. Therefore if you are blind, deaf or a very heavy sleeper, this will allow you to wake up when desired in order for you to complete your daily tasks that need to be done throughout the day.

Tutorial Six: The Internet and Online Communities

Provide the web address and the name of the community you are investigating

I will be investigating the online community of facebook. The web address is http://www.facebook.com/

What is the brief or focus of this community

Facebook is a free online social networking website. Its purpose is to allow users to connect and communicate with friends, family and others that share common interests. Even more, it enables individuals to know what is happening in friends lives, and a great tool for reconnecting with old friends from primary and high school.

What services are provided? How interactive in this site? How can people can contribute?

Facebook provides the service where all users can create their own profile page including, personal information, photo albums, and their current life situations. The users are able to add friends, edit, and maintain their profile, write messages on their own and their friends profile, compose private and public messages, upload photos and videos and become a fan of their favourite groups. There are many ways people can interact on facebook including walls, photos, status, chat, news feeds, notifications and joining groups. A individuals wall is a space on their profile where their friends can post public comments for the individual to see, and their current activity. Individuals can upload photos, write descriptions and tag the people in the photos, and which others can write their comments underneath. An individuals status informs other users that are friends of what they are currently up to, or their opinions and views on anything, and in which their friends can comment on underneath their status. Chat allows you to have a conversation with friends that are online. News feeds appear on every users home page which includes the individuals profile changes, upcoming events, friend suggestions and birthdays. Notifications are things that are sent to you to inform you that someone has added you as a friend, private and public messages, quizzes, and invitations which you can either accept or decline. Individuals can also join groups of become a fan of groups, for example their favourite bands. Therefore facebook is a major interactive website and has many service which individuals can execute this.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment on why people choose to contribute to this community. What is it they are seeking?

People choose to contribute this community because it is allows for individuals whether overseas, or living in the same town to instantly communicate and interact with friends, family and others. As a member of facebook, I contribute to this community in order to chat online with friends in order to keep in contact, upload photos of recent events, make new friends, find old friends, writing comments and seeing what friends have been doing by viewing their profiles, photos and videos.

Cut and paste an example of the type of topics being discussed

There are many different types of topics being discussed on facebook including what is currently happening in peoples lives, what they are doing for the weekend, whose getting married, who broke up with who, you name it! To be honest, it one big gossip community. Below is an example of a social event:

118Th Waikaia Rugby Club Cabaret
Start Time:Saturday, July 31, 2010 at 8:00pm
End Time:Sunday, August 1, 2010 at 12:00pm
Location:Waikaia Community Centre

The first cabaret was held in memory of the time Maui and the European explorer J.T. Thomson battled to the death during a vicious drinking game in the Waikaia region. Since that time the cabaret has been a celebration loosely related to the local rugby team.

There is a rich history behind this event, including the 1911 event in which club members burnt the Waikaia bridge so the coppers could not confiscate the illegal moonshine that was being sold at the event. By morning, no evidence remained of the previous evenings activity.

Whilst no theme has yet to be decided on, Club president J.T.A McKee together with Club Captain Darrin Wing have ruled out two possible themes. Queer Eye for The Straight Guy was dismissed as 'encouraging ye Auckland rable' whilst the 'Recession Session' was deemed inappropriate for local exporter morale.

Considering material presented during the course and make comment on the potential ethical issues that may arise in this community

Potential ethical issues that may arise within this community include users stalking other individuals profile, users providing too much personal information for other to find where they live, work etc, viruses that can get into users profiles, the level of privacy, users using fake identities and profiles therefore providing false information, the types of photos uploaded onto peoples profile, and the fact people can upload photos and videos of you, and tag your name underneath without your permission.

Considering material presented during the lecture and make comment on the benefits this community holds over traditional notions of community

There are many benefits that facebook obtains over traditional notions of community. This includes connecting friends and family over large or small distances, gives users the ability to connect with people who have common interests, information is instant and shared at high speed, and there is no hierarchy meaning everyone has an equal voice.

Consider material presented during the lecture and make comment what this community lacks or can not provide which traditional communities can

However, facebook in relation to traditional communities lacks verbal/face to face communication, the information that is shared on facebook is always reliable and valid, people can become addictive and rely on their only way of communication, only people with computers and the Internet are able to join facebook.

Tutorial Four and Five: Video Production Sessions

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by You Tube.

You tube is a free website that offers individuals to easily upload and share videos that they have originally created. They can also discover, watch, create play lists, save favourites and comment on videos. There are many different types of videos including, sport, music, entertainment, news and politics, film and animation, science and technology, and autos and vehicles, hence the reason why millions of people are connected to you tube. This website connects individuals from around the world, whether friends, family or others that have common interests by allowing each other to watch and share their experiences, and write comments underneath. Personally, I use You Tube as a way of listening to music videos that I enjoy.

Provide a brief account on how the use of planning, storyboarding, and scripting aided your groups short film.

In my group, we made a short film called "Teddies troubles". Within the editing stage of the film process, we used the technique of storyboarding to add or discard parts of scenes in order to obtain the flow and sequence of the film, to view the end product and to make more changes if needed. We also used the technique of scripting which allows the thoughts and ideas of the author to be captured by the audience, and increases the entertainment of the film. In the film, we included mood and expressions, movement, different camera angles, background sound, and on screen graphics and titles. This allowed the group to create the desired end product of the film, and entertainment of the audience due to the audio and visual effects.

Tutorial Three: Blog Creation Tasks

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by blogger

Blogger offers a free website to individuals around the world to create, edit and maintain a blog profile for personal, business or political purposes. This allows individuals on an ongoing basis to upload their photos and videos, express their opinions and views to share things they find interesting, and links to other blogs. Individuals are able to connect with other blogger members including friends, family, and others who may share common interests by emailing, or writing comments underneath each others blog posts. This service has given individuals a voice, a hobby, and a new way to connect with others. Another blog host is http://www.twitter.com/

Tutorial Two: Digital Camera use and applications

"A new technology is rarely superior to an old one in every feature". Briefly discuss this statement in relation to digital camera technology. What would you consider to be some of the pluses and minuses digital camera technology holds in relation to more traditional film based cameras?

In today's society, digital camera technology is becoming more common as we find cameras within work, home and leisure environments. If we compare digital cameras to traditional analogue film cameras, we can understand that digital cameras are more advanced technology. This is because with digital cameras, photos can be stored on a computer, disc or hard drive without needing to be developed, unlike a traditional cameras where all the photos on the canister had to be taken into a profession to develop in order to be able to view and store the photos. Digital cameras are also able to shoot videos.

Positives of a digital camera: Can take more photos, able to edit and delete photos, able to store photos on a hard copy, able to choose what photos you want to develop, can take photos at any time of the day, and you can instantly see the photo you have taken.

Negatives of a digital camera: There is education involved in being able to transfer photos from camera to other hardware devices, there are many small parts of the camera including batteries, memory card, usb, etc
, photos can use large amounts of space on hard drives, and if photos are stored on Cd's they can get easily scratched and damaged.

List some of the ways that digital images can be stored transferred and manipulated using other communications technology

Cd's
Computers
Laptops
Memory cards
Emails
Printers
PlayStation
Ipods

Given the prevalence of image capturing devices, and thinking about the issues discussed in tutorial one, consider what sort of ethical issues may arise with their use

The main ethical issues involved with the usage of digital camera technology are copyright and privacy issues of peoples photos. All professional photographers ensure their photos are stamped on the back with their name and company so others are unable to copy and steal their photos. Privacy of a persons photos are also another ethical issue as once they are uploaded onto the Internet, the person may have no control over their photos in terms of who can look at them, alteration and manipulation.

Briefly discuss some of the ways that digital images could, or are being used in occupational therapy practice

In occupational therapy practice, digital camera technology can be used in order to improve both functional independence and occupational performance. This may include taking photos of the client within their intervention to help analyse their progress, function and ability in performing a task. When occupational therapists attend home visit assessments, they may take photos of the client performing a toilet/bed/shower transfer, and/or the environment in terms of access, safety, and possible equipment that may need to be placed within the clients home, e.g. From a photo captured in the bathroom, the occupational therapist could recognise the toilet was very low for the client with a recent hip replacement, so an over toilet frame would be required to aid this persons toilet transfers. Taking photos is also required when certain types of equipment such as rails need to be installed by builders, and which they need to know where to place the equipment correctly.

Provide a brief summary of the services offered by Flickr.com

Flickr is a website that offers photo management for people to upload and organise their photos and videos. People are able to share their photos and videos with friends, family, and other contacts that have been given permission, and in return can write comments and add tags. Flickr offers a privacy level which determines who can view your images, and a usage license so that your photos are protected. With your photos, you can make prints, posters, calenders, cards, photo books and collage products.

Name one other photo storage website which offers a service similar to Flickr.com

FACE BOOK!

Explain what the difference is between a digital and an optical zoom

Most cameras have both optical zoom and digital zoom. Optical zoom works just like a zoom lens on a film camera. The lens changes focal length and magnification as it is zoomed. Image quality stays high throughout the zoom range. Digital zoom simply crops the image to a smaller size, then enlarges the cropped portion to fill the frame again. Digital zoom results in a significant loss of quality.

Explain what is meant by the term mega pixel

A Mega pixel is a unit of measurement which represents one million pixels — those tiny dots of color which make up an image. Mega pixels represent the resolution, or size and quality, of an image, or an image capturing device such as a web cam or digital camera. The higher number of mega pixels a camera can capture, the higher quality the images it produces will be. Casey, M. (2010). What are mega pixels? Tutorial One: Information Technology and Ethical Issues

Provide a definition of information technology/information communications technology.

Information technology has been defined by the Information Technology Association of America, or the ITAA as being the study, design, development, implementation support and/or management of any computer based information systems. This relates particularly to software applications and computer hardware. Information technology deals with using electronic computers and software to convert, store, protect, process, retrieve with security or transmit any information. Hill, S. (2008, April 14). Definition of Information Technology. Retrieved May 17, 2010, from http://ezinearticles.com/?Definition-of-Information-Technology&id=1109986

Consider the definition of IT you have provided. How is this form of technology prevalent in our society? How common place has it become?

Information technology is very common in our society as we are surrounded by technology and is used all over the world. It allows us to carry out tasks in a quick and easy manner and therefore saves time and energy compared to doing the task manually. This includes computers, cameras, cell phones, ipods, etc.

What IT devices or system do you feel comfortable and competent using?

Within my occupational therapy course, we are expected to use word processor for all our assignments, moodle, relevant websites for studying and keeping up to date with the work provided. Therefore, by being on my laptop daily, I am becoming competent with using the internet, finding websites and using moodle. I also feel competent using a digital camera, cell phone, ipod, television, stereo, and websites including facebook, trademe, youtube and hotmail.

Thinking about your own fieldwork experiences, consider how IT is being used in Occupational Therapy practice?

On fieldwork placement one, the health professionals within the mental health setting used the computer in order to document client's progress notes, case studies, goals, and discharge planning. They would also the computer for communicating with other health professionals and organisations through emails, newsletters, and researching information relevant to the setting. They found this more efficient and effective compared to manually writing documentation.

What ethical implications arise from the capturing, sharing and transferring of information via IT devices.

Privacy and security issues, copyright, informed consent, accessibility, property and accuracy.

Provide a definition of computer ethics

Computer ethics is set of moral principles that regulate the use of computers. Some common issues of computer ethics include intellectual property rights (such as copyrighted electronic content), privacy concerns, and how computers affect society. The Tech Terms Computer Dictionary. (2005-2010). Computer Ethics. Retrieved May 18, 2010, from http://www.techterms.com/definition/computerethics

Provide a definition of intellectual property

A product of the intellect that has commercial value, including copyrighted property such as literary or artistic works, and ideational property, such as patents, appellations of origin, business methods, and industrial processes. Houghton Mifflin Company. (2009). The American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language (4th Ed). Retrieved May 18, 2010, from http://www.thefreedictionary.com/intellectual+property

Provide a definition of social justice

Fair and proper administration of laws conforming to the natural law that all persons, irrespective of ethnic origin, gender, possessions, race, religion, etc., are to be treated equally and without prejudice. BussinessDictionary.com. (2010). Social Justice. Retrieved May 18, 2010, from http://www.businessdictionary.com/definition/social-justice.html

Provide a definition for informed consent

Informed consent is a legal procedure to ensure that a patient or client knows all of the risks and costs involved in a treatment. The elements of informed consents include informing the client of the nature of the treatment, possible alternative treatments, and the potential risks and benefits of the treatment. Cherry, K. (2010). What is social justice? Retrieved May 18, 2010, from http://psychology.about.com/od/iindex/g/def_informedcon.htm

In your own words, briefly summarise why (or why not) a great understanding of ITC and the ethical issues it encompasses will help us in our practice and daily lives.

Yes, I believe a great understanding of ITC and its ethical issues will help occupational therapists in their practice and daily lives. This is because occupational therapists use information technology daily (such as websites, word processor, case studies and discharge planning) in their practice in order to find, explore, analyse, problem solve and present information. Therefore by obtaining a great understanding of ITC and its ethical issues, they can use their practice in an safe, ethical and effective manner. It is also a quick and easy tool for documentation, and communication with other health professionals and other relevant organisations therefore occupational therapists need to understand how to use these tools work in order to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness on the clients treatment. Occupational therapists also use technology to improve functional performance and occupational performance, so therefore it is important for the therapist to understand the technology to remain current and meaningful to the clients and therefore providing the best treatment they give can to the clients. In our daily lives, technology is becoming everyday meaningful occupations, therefore it is important to maintain a great understanding of the new technology. This is because technology is consistently improving, and therefore making life easier, and providing better ways of carrying out tasks.
